Things to Bring for the Hiking

Proper equipment and gear are crucial for a successful and comfortable trek up Mount Kilimanjaro. Having the right clothing layers and accessories ensures you stay warm, dry, and safe across different climate zones.

Bags: Day pack (for you to carry) and a Large duffel bag or backpack (for porters to carry).

Clothing Layers: Shorts (for first and last day only), hiking pants, lounging pants for evenings, short-sleeved t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, long underwear, fleece jacket or wool sweater, fleece pants, and a down jacket or ski parka (rated for temperatures well below freezing with wind).

Rain Protection: Waterproof rain jacket and rain pants (needed in both hot rainforest and cold snow zones).

Undergarments: Underwear and sports bras for women.

Cold Weather Gear: Waterproof mittens/gloves (one thin pair and one thick pair for layering), wool or pile hat, balaclava or neck gaiter, and chemical-activated hand and foot warmers.

Footwear & Sleeping Gear

Be sure to thoroughly break in your footwear before your hike to avoid blisters!

Footwear: Trekking shoes/boots for daytime hiking (preferably warm, waterproof, with good ankle support—neither too light nor too heavy), tennis shoes or sandals for lounging in the evening, and gaiters.

Socks: Hiking socks for warmer conditions, heavy wool socks for colder conditions, and sock liners to wick away moisture.

Sleeping Gear: High-altitude sleeping bag (rated -25°C / -10°F or colder is recommended), sleeping pad, and a repair kit.

Other Essential Trekking Gear & Accessories

Hydration & Optics: Water bottles and Camelbak (2-3 L capacity), water filter or iodine purification tablets, sun hat with brim, sunglasses, and bandana.

Trekking & Lighting: Ski or trekking poles, headlamp or flashlight, and extra sets of batteries (cold weather shortens battery life).

Electronics & Miscellaneous: Camera, film/memory cards, tripod, video camera, binoculars, notebook, journal, pen/pencil, pocket knife, electricity adapter, playing cards, games, books, or small souvenirs for local guides/porters.

Trail Snacks & Comforts: Energy bars, hard candy, snacks, comfort foods, and salt/pepper/spices for meals.

Rainy Season Extras: Umbrella (particularly useful in the rainforest and can be purchased locally), plastic bags, and zip-lock bags for waterproofing electronics/gear.

Personal Care & Toiletries: Toilet paper (with zip-lock bags for used paper), small towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, moist handi-wipes, hand sanitizer, lotion, glasses/contacts with solution, comb, mirror, sewing kit, alarm clock, and swimsuit (for hotel pool).

Essential Documents & Travel Preparation

Documents: Passport, Yellow Fever certificate, Tanzania Visa, medical insurance details, vaccination records, airline tickets, address book, maps/guidebooks, and cash ($400 or more in cash/travellers cheques, including small US/Euro/Tanzanian bills) or credit cards.

Important Safety Tip: Make copies of your passport, TZ visa, airline tickets/schedule, and travellers cheque numbers. Leave one copy with someone at home and keep a separate copy in your duffel bag.
