Overview

If you are planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with us, one of the most important things to understand is how altitude can affect your body.
Today, I would like to explain one of the most common altitude-related conditions experienced by climbers on Kilimanjaro: Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
Understanding AMS can help you prepare better, stay safe, and increase your chances of reaching the summit successfully.

What Is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)?

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the most common form of altitude sickness and can affect climbers when ascending to high elevations—typically above 2,500–3,000 meters (8,200–9,800 feet) above sea level.
AMS develops when your body does not have enough time to adapt to reduced air pressure at higher altitudes.
Although the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere remains approximately 21%, the air pressure decreases as elevation increases. This means each breath delivers less usable oxygen to your body.
When your body struggles to adjust, symptoms of altitude sickness may begin to appear.

Common Symptoms of AMS

Symptoms often develop within several hours after gaining altitude and may include:
Headache
Nausea
Loss of appetite
Dizziness
Fatigue or unusual tiredness
Difficulty sleeping
Shortness of breath during physical activity
Symptoms may start mildly but can become more serious if ignored.
Can AMS Affect Anyone?
Yes.
Acute Mountain Sickness can affect anyone, regardless of age, fitness level, or previous climbing experience.
Even experienced hikers and athletes may develop AMS if they ascend too quickly or do not allow enough time for acclimatization.

How Peak Climbers Safaris Monitors Your Health

At Peak Climber Safaris, your safety is our highest priority.
Our experienced mountain guides carefully monitor every climber throughout the trek. Each evening, routine health checks are performed, including:
Measuring oxygen saturation (SpO₂)
Checking pulse rate
Asking health-related questions
Monitoring for early signs of altitude sickness
These daily assessments help identify concerns early and allow timely action before symptoms become severe.

How to Prevent Acute Mountain Sickness

1. Climb Slowly – “Pole Pole”
The number one rule on Kilimanjaro is:
“Pole Pole” — a Swahili phrase meaning slowly, slowly.
Kilimanjaro is not a race. Walking at a steady pace gives your body time to acclimatize and significantly reduces your risk of AMS.
2. Stay Hydrated
Your body loses more fluids at high altitude and during physical activity.
Drink enough water throughout your climb to maintain proper hydration.
3. Eat Regularly
Climbing requires a lot of energy.
Eating balanced meals helps maintain strength and supports the acclimatization process.
4. Avoid Alcohol and Smoking
Alcohol and smoking can worsen altitude symptoms and reduce your body’s ability to adapt to high elevations.
5. Follow Your Guide’s Instructions
Our guides are trained in mountain safety and altitude illness management.
If you notice any symptoms or feel unwell during the climb, inform your guide immediately. Early communication can make a big difference.
6. Consider Preventive Medication
Some climbers use Acetazolamide (Diamox) to reduce the risk of AMS.
If recommended by your doctor, a commonly used preventive dose is 125 mg twice daily. Many climbers begin taking it one day before the climb and continue during the trek based on medical advice.
Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any medication.

What Should You Do If Symptoms Develop?

If you begin experiencing symptoms of AMS:
Tell your guide immediately
Avoid continuing to ascend
Rest and allow time for acclimatization
If symptoms worsen, descending to a lower altitude may become necessary.
Early recognition and proper management are essential to prevent more serious altitude illnesses.
